Getting Unstuck: Finding the Root, Not the Symptom

If you've ever felt stuck — in your business, your career, or your life — you already know the pattern. You fix the thing that hurts. It feels better for a week. Then it comes back. Same pain, different day.

I saw this for 28 years as a physical therapist. A patient would walk in with back pain, and the obvious move was to treat the back. But the back was almost never the real problem. The real problem was the hip that didn't move, the weak core, the posture at the desk, the stress they carried in their shoulders. The back pain was the symptom. The root was somewhere else entirely.

Why treating the symptom feels productive (but isn't)

Treating symptoms is seductive because it's fast. You get relief. You check the box. You move on. But the relief is shallow, and the box you checked doesn't stay checked. The pain returns because the cause never left.

The same thing happens in a business. Sales drop, so you run a promotion. A team member quits, so you hire a replacement. Cash gets tight, so you cut a expense. Each move treats the symptom. None of them asks the harder question: what's actually underneath all of this?

How to dig for the root

In the clinic, I learned a simple discipline: keep asking 'why' until the answer stops being about the pain and starts being about the person. The same discipline works in coaching. Here's what it looks like in practice:

  • Name the symptom plainly. 'Sales are down.' 'I'm exhausted.' 'My team isn't aligned.' Don't dress it up.
  • Ask why. Then ask why again. Most roots are three or four whys deep, not one.
  • Look for the pattern, not the incident. If it's happened before, it's not a one-off — it's a system.
  • Check the person, not just the problem. A business problem is rarely just a business problem.

The whole person, not just the pain

The biggest lesson physical therapy taught me was this: you treat the whole person, not just the pain. The pain is information. It tells you something is out of balance — physically, emotionally, systemically. Your job is to listen to it, not silence it.

I coach the same way. When an owner tells me they're stuck, we don't jump to tactics. We get curious. We look at the vision, the team, the systems, and the mindset carrying all of it. Because a business problem is rarely just a business problem. It's usually a person problem wearing a business costume.

The shift that changes everything

The moment you stop chasing symptoms and start digging for roots, everything gets quieter. Not easier — quieter. You stop reacting to every fire and start addressing what's feeding the fires. You build a plan around the cause instead of the crisis.

That's how you get unstuck. Not by working harder on the wrong thing, but by finding the right thing to work on.

"The pain is information. Your job is to listen to it, not silence it."
